Caregiver Support
As
a bonus to the reauthorization of the federal Older Americans
Act in 2000, the National Family Caregiver Support Program
was born, providing national recognition of the nearly 22.4
million, and rising, households involved in care giving to
persons aged 50 or over.
To
provide services to caregivers in the seven westernmost counties
of North Carolina, what is known as Region A, the Area Agency
on Aging surveyed needs of caregivers. Among the five categories
set up by the federal Older Americans Act under National Family
Caregiver Program, respite; training, education, & support
groups; and information were the greatest needs. Region A
Area Agency on Aging implemented the Family Caregiver Respite
Program to help meet the needs of caregivers of persons 60
years of age or older.
